Beyond The Diorama: Caribou World
Beyond The Diorama: Caribou World is an immersive XR experience born from a collaboration between USC students and leading experts. Funded by the USC Wicked Problems Practicum, the project tackles the urgent threat climate change poses to caribou and their habitats. Working alongside the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, students from diverse fields like game design, engineering, and journalism crafted an interactive narrative that blends education with entertainment. The game highlights how melting permafrost disrupts ecosystems, pushing caribou into danger from predators, parasites, and habitat loss. By demystifying complex scientific concepts, it urges players to take practical action against climate change. Equipped with advanced tools like the BLK 360 scanner from Lecia Geosystems, the team delivered a multi-layered experience that bridges art, technology, and environmental advocacy. This project not only showcases the power of XR in storytelling but also emphasizes the need for immediate, collective solutions. It’s a compelling call to understand climate impacts through the lens of vulnerable species. The result.
