Description

WFC Experiments is a procedural generation playground built in GameMaker Studio, inspired by Oskar Stålberg's Wave Function Collapse (WFC) demo and Daniel Shiffman's educational breakdown of the algorithm. Created over a weekend, this experimental project uses a brute-force walker method that fills neighboring tiles and backtracks when stuck, featuring safeguards to prevent infinite loops. While functional, the process can be slow and prone to dead ends, so smaller grid sizes are recommended—especially when using the vibrant colored tileset. The minimalist grey-and-white alternative handles larger grids better, up to 30x30. Navigate with keyboard shortcuts: [SPACE] to start, [UP/DOWN] to adjust grid size, [LEFT/RIGHT] to switch tilesets, [G] to toggle the grid, and [S] to save screenshots. Click and drag for a radial menu with all commands. A passion project at heart, WFC Experiments celebrates the joy of procedural generation and serves as a stepping stone for deeper exploration into WFC and overlapping model techniques.
