Turtle Tailgate

Is a fast-paced Pico-8 shmup where players dodge obstacles like turtles, starfish, and sea urchins while collecting hearts to gain extra lives. The goal is to stay behind turtles as long as possible to boost your score multiplier, but timing is key—dodge at the last moment to maximize points. Avoid getting too far from the next turtle, as the multiplier drops quickly. Mastering the game requires quick reflexes and smart lane switching. Instead of holding arrow keys, tap the desired lane direction for instant movement. Skilled players can even linger between lanes to navigate tight gaps, leveraging the character’s hitbox size to avoid collisions. Early on, every 1000 points grants a heart, but these become scarcer as the game progresses. Created solo in July 2022 using Pico-8, this title showcases creative solutions to technical limits, inspired by tutorials like Krystman’s parallax scrolling techniques. The result is a polished, challenging experience with a retro.
