Golden Axed: A Cancelled Prototype is a rare glimpse into a project that never saw the light of day. Originally part of SEGA's ambitious SEGA Reborn series, this 2.5D reboot of the classic Golden Axe game was developed by SEGA Studios Australia. The project aimed to bring beloved SEGA IPs back to life, blending retro charm with modern design. Alongside Golden Axe, the team also worked on reimagined versions of Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, and a runner-style Shinobi, all set in a shared universe. However, the studio closed in 2013, leaving the project abandoned. Now, for SEGA's 60th anniversary, fans can experience a working prototype of Golden Axed—a vertical slice showcasing the game's potential. Created as a tribute, this release offers a nostalgic look at what could have been. The prototype, available until 10am PST / 6pm BST on October 19th, highlights the creative vision.
