Dafen Oil Painting Village: An Immersive Reality
Dafen Oil Painting Village is a unique blend of art, community, and technology. Based in Shenzhen, China, it brings together over 20,000 artists and entrepreneurs who collectively produce and distribute millions of paintings worldwide. This collective accounts for 56% of all commercial art sold in Europe and the United States. Remarkably, the operation thrives without heavy central coordination, relying instead on organic collaboration and shared resources. In 2017, Jeremy Kirshbaum explored the village, capturing its essence through interviews and immersive data collection using advanced sensors and 360° visuals. The result is an experimental prototype that offers a glimpse into the village’s vibrant atmosphere. This immersive experience blends reality and art, highlighting the fusion of traditional and digital media. Developed with support from the Emerging Media Lab and SiverVR, the project remains intentionally raw to encourage reflection on the evolving nature of media and simulation. Thanks to Imisi3d for their vital contribution. Dafen Oil Painting Village stands as a testament to creative innovation and collective effort.
